How To Choose The Right Charcoal Barbecue Grill

What To Look For When Choosing A Charcoal Barbecue Grill

How To Build A Grill Out Of A 55 Gallon Drum

I was up late night, trying to corral all the emails that flooded my inbox  the other night from some folks we met after we had a BBQ luncheon for a group of retired teachers. Many of them wanted to know how much skill is required to build a 55 gallon drum grill.

Well, it does not take a lot of skill, but you need the right tools. For some investing in tools that they will never use again is just plain silly, when you can buy some great BBQ grills out on the market. Don’t get me wrong building your own grill is rewarding, and you get to sing your own praises (at least I do). Ok, so what kind of barbecue grill can you get on the retail market?

First you need to decide what kind of grill you want.

Charcoal or gas?

If you are leaning toward getting a charcoal grill, the very first thing you want to know is what type of cooking do you mean to do with it. So first of all, give a good thought to what you plan to cook and how much you need to spend. Charcoal grills are my personal favorite, because I just think it makes the meat tastier, but they can get pricey, and to get one with all the bells and whistles you can end up spending well over $1,000 to get one.

What Size Grill Do You Need?

You don’t need a 55 gallon BBQ grill for just you and the misses, but if you entertain frequently then you are going to want a bigger grill surface with some heavy steel construction and durable grates that are going to stand up to heavy use. Charcoal griddles run in a wide selection of sizes.

Portability

Do you want a small grill that you can throw in the car, and head to the park, take hunting, or camping with? Do you want a grill you can move around the yard, or one that will pretty much say put?

How Do You Like To Cook Your Food?

In a similar way you must identify the sort of cooking you wish to do. Do you want to be in a position to indirectly grill full savory chickens, roasts or full racks of ribs. For indirect griddling you want masses of space to build a fire on one side and still have space for the food. You may want to get a taller grill with a lid height to stand up a chicken.

Do you want a big open grill, or one that you can close the lid on?

Controls

One other thing to look for is airflow control. If you don’t find a grill with the right airflow you will end up spending a ton more on charcoal than you must. When you talk about charcoal griddles, the very first thing that may jump up is the Weber Kettle Griddle . This is the best selling charcoal griddle on the market. They typically come in eighteen, twenty-two and twenty-six inch sizes.  These griddles are really flexible and simple to use.

Basically it is a large not to ugly metal ball on tall legs. The round shape focuses the heat and decreases heat loss to the outside air.

The Web Performer is a kettle grill, built into a giant stand with a massive table top. It also has a one pound propane system for igniting your charcoal, so there is no need for lighter liquid. See this article and don’t add lighter fluid ever again to your BBQ charcoal. The way the system works is you pour your charcoal, push a switch and wait for about ten minutes, and then flip the witch off, and start your grilling.

Another preferred choice is a Kamado BBQ grill like the Large Green Egg.

These big ceramic units are excellent for not only great barbecuing but also smoking. With a Kamado style griddle you have great heat control so you can decide the temperature you need to be cooking at. Naturally you’re looking at a load more money for one of these but it is an investment that is worth the money if you plan to do plenty of cooking.

Charoal grills( My biased opinon) off the most choices in cooking methods. Naturally they take more time to get going and lack the ease of a gas griddle, but you will have a ton more flexibility when cooking. In the end it comes down to picking the right size grill, the one for your style of cooking, and how wide you want to open your pocket book.
